Riding the RED Back Loop in Sterling Forest

Over the last few years there has been a lot of awesome trail maintenance and building going on in Ringwood and Sterling Forest State Parks. If you haven’t been to either in a while, you will find many new multi use trails and re-routes.

The Red Back Trail is an older trail located in what used to be a remote section of Sterling Forest before the completion of the Hutchinson/Munsee-Eagle/Red Back Multi-Use Trails Loop. Which is another awesome loop to check out.

The first time we had ridden the Red Back Trail was probably back in 2009… It is named after the Red Back Mine which was discovered in 1780 and was last worked in 1900. This is also a great trail to hike or run on.

This is a pretty challenging trail to ride. If the conditions aren’t perfect, you can expect to hike a bike in a few sections but it is rideable. For us on this day, temps were above 80º, humidity level was 92% and it was a little rainy out, making the trails very slick so we needed to walk a few sections that we would normally be able to ride. I haven’t felt sweat pour from my head and face like this in some time.

I am absolutely loving the Ibis Ripley that I picked up from Ranch Camp in Vermont! This bike is capable of it all. If you get a chance next time your in Vermont, be sure to visit Ranch Camp for some bikes, beers and burritos.
