Review of the Salomon X Ultra Mid 2 SPIKES GTX

With winter weather finally back in the forecast, we’d thought it was a great time to share this fun video we put together while testing out the Salomon X Ultra Mid 2 SPIKES. This hiking boot; which is also a fully capable winter trail running shoe, offers a waterproof GORE-TEX lining with 9 carbide spikes within the famed Salomon Contagrip rubber sole.

We chose to test these out on trails of Harriman State Park, one of our local favorites. Through our testing we found these were perfect for days when the ice was not thick enough or not plentiful enough to warrant a NANOspikes or MICROspikes. They also worked great when hiking in snow when snowshoes were not needed or required.

The sizing comes in a little bigger so that you have ample room for a thicker sock and it also allows your foot to breathe, keeping it warmer on those cold winter days. With a lightweight sock, the shoe will feel a little to big. We recommend to stick with your normal shoe size and keep the aforementioned in mind. We always carry microspikes along for the adventure, especially for steeper sections of trails and summits where there can be more ice. This is where these shoes alone won’t be enough.

We have used the Salomon X Ultra MID GTX without the spikes for many years and love the feel and durability of them. Whether you chose the SPIKE version or without, you will be pleased having added these to your collection. Let us know what winter shoes you like in the comments below. Thanks for watching!
