Snowshoeing to the TOP of Mount Marcy in the ADIRONDACK High Peaks!

We found snow! This past weekend a group of us headed north in search of a winter adventure. We landed in the High Peaks Region of the Adirondacks to climb some mountains and get away from it all. The weather greeted us with the perfect conditions to summit Mt. Marcy and Tabletop. We packed crampons just in case the conditions above treeline were very icy but there was plenty of snow near the summits so the snowshoes did the trick.

Mount Marcy Summit Forecast - Feb. 23rd, 2019 - Temperature 28º // Windchill - 4º // Lots of Snow // Wind Speed 15 - 20mph. Perfect conditions for snowshoeing!

Distance to the top of Marcy (5,344’) and back to the ADK Loj is around 15 miles, with about 4000 feet of gain, and many options off the Van Hoevenberg Trail to summit additional peaks.

We awoke from our lean-to at 6am, with the goal of being on the trail by 7am. The video tells the rest of the story from our weekend. Thanks for watching! #timetoplay

Important reminder when traveling by foot in the backcountry of the Adirondacks, these are multi-use trails that require you to wear snowshoes even when the path is packed to avoid post holing. This can make conditions dangerous for backcountry skiers.

We also squeezed in some speed skating at the Olympic Center (mostly tried to stay upright…) and competed at the Saranac Lake Snowshoe Festival. #timetoplay
