Winter Trail Running with Microspikes

We have had a nice streak of cold weather here in the northeast, unfortunately not much snow has fallen where we live. There is just enough ice and snow, making it necessary to wear some kind of winter traction device or winter shoe with added spikes such as the Salomon Speedspikes. We primarily use the Kahtoola Microspikes or Hillsounds over our shoes.

This year, our go to winter trail running shoes has been the Salomon Gore-tex Sense Rides and the Microspikes fit perfectly over them. We generally recommend to size down on the microspikes if your wearing a trail running shoe, and for a hiking boot, to stick with the size recommendations.

This is Sam’s favorite time of year and his go to winter protection for his paws is the Musher’s Secret Paw Protection Wax. We apply a generous amount and reapply as needed so we always carry it on us.

Elizabeth, Evan, Sam and I met in southern Harriman State Park and started our run along Stony Brook near Reeves Meadow Visitor Center. We ran about 8 miles, crossed a few streams and enjoyed the winter weather.
